Default Steven's Community Fan Art

Hey Guys,

As some of you may know from the Introduction thread that I do a lot of Community fanart. And I hope you guys don't mind if I dedicate a thread to posting all of the Community themed work I've done in the past and in the future.

Character designs of the Green Dale 7;

These are about a year old and I plan on redoing them eventually. Some updated version of the designed appeared in my Fan animation;

I can't of hate it now. I did it in January... and Its not that good. I need to remake it eventually. The following were storyboards I did fort he animation.

Here's the first Community related fan art I did;

Troy and Abed In 8 Bit

Pop Pop

T shirts I never finished or never produced;

And a 5 minute sketch of Alison Brie;

Her eyes in this is creeepy.

Some one paid me to draw Troy, Abed, and Annie's Boobs hanging out with a friend for their friend's birthday. The dog is the friend's puppy.

Lovin it,
how much do you charge for illustrating? cause I'd pay for a pic of pierce, shirley, chang and annies boobs dressed as speed racer, trixie, spritle and chim chim in that order on my thread marked "fan fic - be nice."

what coloring programs do you use?
I use manga studio because the transparancies are a lot more user friendly, but the lack of eyedropper function forces me to write the base tones stats.

also, I keep getting a hand drawn look, do you have any secrets to that quick solid color style other g.a.'s/animators get?
p.s. that speed racer pic on fan fic. I'll make my starting offer of $20

I use Photoshop for all my coloring needs. Just depends really on the charge. I know you're not supposed to say it to the client, but I'm terrible with pricing. One end, I know my talents should be worth something and at the moment its my only source of income, on the other end I'm scared to charge too much.

I'll PM you and make a solid offer.

I;ll understand if you don't want to do it. I get subcontracted out to do other people's drawings all the time and I know that getting work done is a hassle because you're getting hit up all the time for projects that take at least an hour and people expect that kind of speed.
I've only known one guy who could knock out a full page in an hour and that guy wasted his life and became I.T.

If you don't want to do it I'll understand. It's really just a personal indulgence and I would get that maybe you wouldn't want to spend a week working on a project like that.

Back to the art questions, how do you photoshop dudes get those smooth solid, vector style lines in photoshop? Is it because I'm penciling by hand and inking on mangastudio or am I not using the line tool right?

At the moment, when I'm not working on other people's projects, I'm working on this. Its a Avenger parody poster but with Dexter characters.

If you look on the left, which is how I big I want the picture to be on the web it looks really good (sans spots that need to be drawn and cleaned up).

If you look at the project at the size it really is it looks terrible.

You always work two to three times bigger than what its supposed to be. Cause when you scale it down later it looks awesome due to pixel compression.

mmm. ok.

I got spoiled at a very early start by micron .005's and used them as my inking range. all my "good" inks stick to a certain scale because of it.

I've a feeling learning to ink with a thicker line on pen and working cleanup scale in a different magnification will make all the difference. that helps a lot, thanks

You're inking BEFORE you scan and then scaling away the imperfections using some b & w brightness or gamma correction and then coloring with the fill tool?

is the guy in the center val halen? love the super roommates.

In that pic its Major Glory, Val Hallen, Action Hank, Agent Honeydew, a bit of Dexter in his dodgeball machine. Not shown is Falcor the Woodsman and Krunk.

Actually I sketch directly in Photoshop, then ink in Photoshop.

are you using a light pen when you sketch in photoshop? not sure if I'm ready to drop the cash on that, still saving to buy a computer projector so I can hand paint stuff I do in photoshop on a full size canvas. (because of that whole not talented enough to draw at different scales problem.)

man, gfy learning to sketch in digital, I can't draw without look straight at the tip of the pencil.

I'm looking for a cheap light pen, you upped the game by posting your art online and I want to play too. can you recommend a good capture pen system?
I'm looking for cheap plus quality.

but grip is important to me too. I won't bat an eyelash on dr. grip .5 mm pencils bought online because I can't find them anywhere. $10 for a pencil.

I'm not sure what a Capture Pen system is.

On a side note, if people are okay with me posting non Community stuff in this thread, I'm closer to being done with that Dexter pic;

Capture pen = light pen. you draw on a tablet or mousepad or something and it goes to your photoshop/mangastudio.

are you drawing on an ipad?

Well, before I compressed the image it was like 20 or 30 layers. Each character having 2 layers, all the buildings, and effects.

So. I looked at cintiq display and was wondering if i could get a loan, since you're obviously already independently wealthy. Or broke.

System crash and I just lost the entire color copy of my t shirt idea.
oh well, gonna have to start over and learn to get faster at inking.

I seem to be having better results using a modified lasso wand tool and filling in than I do with brush for some reason, it's helping me get that solid line of color your getting, but I still can't get solid single piece strokes like you do, or like I do analog.

Maybe mangastudio for inking, adobe elements for color?

You could be saving me about $500 in classes.
I'd like to post vids of semi animated works and stills to music, any suggestions for software?

I'm not sure I've never used Mangastudio or Elements.

And go for it, I'll critique.

Obviously, I'm having trouble with the water in this scene. I don't know if it's the colors or what.

Oh, and that's supposed to be a leg coming out of the back of the bull.

first draft, no highlights.

but moreover I need help with my water in the last pic. I can't find the right color.

Also,
Can you take the cintiq with you places? and can you hold it in your lap? that may help a bit in a year when I can afford it.

AND. Can an Ipad do the same thing with a stylus? or does it detect your wrist like my bamboo tries to when I press against it?

It's a huge hassle for me to try to hold my pen in a different way.

....Check that last part I just saw a tutorial for using sketch on ipad. I can just wear a glove.

Slow down a bit, lets do a question at a time. Coming back online to 4 or 5 post is a bit overwhelming.

The problem is that you're not using reference pictures to sample your colors. The colors you are using a very saturated and unreleasitc, you need to google and look for photography of scenes simlar to how you want it. But you should NEVER pull colors out of your head. I never do.

Also, change the white in your pic to gray and then color, it helps your eye choose colors.

Yea, there's not popping out that needs to be fix on this one.

Never used any of them. The only programs I know that has vector properties is Photoshop (Shapes, and Text, nothing too helpful), Illustrator, Flash, and Office has vector clip art haha.

Cintiq is a monitor for a desktop computer so its not made for portability. But I have had brought it back and forth with my desktop on my trips to Indianapolis.

Sure, the iPad can do a lot of things. But I want one, but I don't have the money for it at the moment. And I don't really know anything about it.

Not to be too critical, but hasn't Velma had a standing monagomous relationship with Johnny Bravo for.... 10 years now?

The art style is based off of Mystery Incorporated, where Velma and Shaggy secretly date for half the series, then Velma holds a grudge fro the rest of the series because Shaggy picked hanging out with his done over dating Velma.

So that was in reference to that. I know you're only joking... but I like explaining stuff.

Yea, It was a week long experiment.

Ironically because of it I knew the plot to the webisodes since January. I got contacted by a production company to do them, but didn't get to do them because it would've been too expensive to fly to LA for a couple of months to work on them.
